Brain Cancer Survivor Quilt

IMG_0983_crop.jpg

This quilt is extremely special to me. I used The Homebody Co.’s Survivor quilt pattern to create a brain cancer memorial quilt for my mom. In honor of my late father, Emmett Wells, the dark grey of the ribbons represent all those in the fight against brain cancer.

My father was a firefighter for Orange County Fire Authority in Orange County, California. When I was seven, he was diagnosed with a terminal brain cancer. We had three more wonderful years before cancer took him from us. Unfortunately, this is not a new or unique story. Firefighters have a 14% higher chance of dying from cancer than the general U.S. population, and cancer caused 70% of line-of-duty deaths for career firefighters in 2016. There are many firefighters and their families dealing with this fact right now.

If you are able to help, here are some amazing organizations working to help:

If you know of more worthy organizations, please feel free to contact me, and I will add them to this list.

I gifted this quilt to my mom as a birthday gift.

This year, we met up in CO for her birthday, and we were able to take some pictures of it at the International Fallen Firefighter’s Memorial. We hadn’t been there since my father’s name was added to the wall in 2004.
